In Bedpans & Broomsticks, most players take on the role of Elders trying to escape from the Shady Pines Village retirement home. One player acts as the Staff, including doctors and nurses, who aim to keep the Elders from escaping and return them to their beds.

Each turn, the Elders move around a series of room tiles that create the layout of the Village. Starting on one tile, they explore new rooms by placing tiles as they discover them. Along the way, Elders can collect helpful items to aid in their escape. The game continues until the Staff captures enough Elders or an Elder successfully reaches one of the exits to escape.
