In Patchwork, two players come together to create beautiful patchwork quilts on their own 9x9 boards. The game starts with a circle of fabric patches laid out randomly. Each player takes five buttons, which serve as both currency and points in the game. On their turn, players can purchase one of the three patches that are available or choose to pass. When a patch is bought, players pay the button cost, move their time token along the time track, and place the patch on their board. The goal is to fit the pieces together neatly, as each patch has a time cost that affects when players can take their turns.

As players move their time tokens, they can earn buttons by passing certain markers on the track. There are also bonus patches available for quick players who can fill in specific areas on their boards. The game continues until both players reach the center of the time track. At the end, players count their buttons and lose points for any empty spaces on their boards. The player with the most points wins, making for a fun and strategic race to build the most impressive quilt!
