The Great Wall invites players to step into the shoes of ancient Chinese clans, working together to defend against the invading Mongolian hordes while building a mighty wall. Each player takes on the role of a General, leading their clan through a series of turns called Years, which are split into four Seasons. Spring brings new threats, Summer is for preparation, Fall allows players to strategize and take actions, and Winter tests their defenses against the attacking hordes.

Throughout the game, players will develop unique strategies based on their clan's strengths and abilities. They can hire Advisors with special skills to enhance their resource production and gain various benefits. While competing to earn Honor points, players must also cooperate at times to fend off the Mongol attacks. The player with the most Honor at the end of the game will be celebrated as the victor.
