In Yamatai, 2 to 4 players explore the beautiful islands of Yamatai, aiming to build stunning palaces, torii gates, and personal buildings. Players take turns selecting a tile to collect ships, buy or sell one ship, and strategically place their ships on the board, starting from designated entryways or adjacent to existing ships.

After placing ships, players can claim resources from the land or build on empty spaces if they have the right colored ships nearby. Building connections with your structures can earn you money based on how many buildings you have. Additionally, players can bank ships and use resources to hire specialists with unique abilities. The game continues until certain end conditions are met, and then players tally their points from buildings, specialists, and money.
